Modernisation of the Erich-Kästner comprehensive school in Essen

Creating space for modern learning concepts: The new "Erich Kästner Comprehensive School" offers space for around 650 pupils and 60 teachers. 

On behalf of the city of Essen, Thesauros Asset Management is the general planner responsible for the refurbishment and modernisation of the school building from the late 1960s. 

The implementation of a cluster concept creates the right environment for modern forms of teaching. A creative interior design concept ensures clear lines and a recognisable effect within the building. The assembly hall, which acts as a central link between the different parts of the building, will be remodelled and equipped with state-of-the-art stage technology. The science classrooms and experimental workshops will also be given a new, contemporary design and equipment. A cafeteria with seating for 100 students completes the extensive range of facilities at the new school.

A "green classroom" is to be created in the outdoor area: A large-scale desealing of the existing area and a modern landscaping redesign of the schoolyard will take place. There are also plans to renovate the sports field.

The use of renewable energies, such as heat pumps for hot water generation and photovoltaic systems on the school roof, will create the conditions for a "KfW55" subsidy for the project.
