House of Austrian History in the MQ Vienna
The House of Austrian History (hdgö) finds a new home as a sustainable timber building in the MuseumsQuartier.
)
The winning project by O&O Baukunst from the architectural competition held in spring 2024 envisages a sustainable new building in timber construction for the hdgö's new location, which elegantly blends in with the existing building. The gutting of the old building offers large, connected exhibition spaces. The design blends naturally into the monastery courtyard, while a sustainable planting concept improves the quality of stay.

“As the client, we attach great importance to efficient, transparent and smooth project management. PLANFRED impressed us with its user-friendly interface, centralized document management and clear communication between all project participants.
We particularly appreciate the ease of use, the clear structures and the traceability in the course of the project,” says Catherine Korwik, authorized signatory l Head of Facility Management MuseumsQuartier Wien.

Sustainability in existing and new buildings
The new hdgö building is made of wood from local sustainable forestry. The old building will be upgraded to meet the latest energy standards and will be certified as a climate-active building. Planting heat-resistant trees and shrubs in the courtyard will prevent the ground from heating up and rainwater will be reused.
